Jacques
Vincent can justifiably claim to be the King of Pinot Gris within Reuilly,
enjoying a perpetual listing within the annual Le Guide Hachette des Vins which helps deliver a strong and loyal
following of private clients (who represent 85% of his total sales)
literally to his door. He receives visitors at his house, a modest 1990s
new build on the edge of Lazenay, overlooking some of the 70 hectares of
cereals that Jacques also farms. The cellar, a prefabricated warehouse -
which dates from the same time - is next door.
His 8.5 hectares of vines are located on the opposite side of the Arnon
and all within the lieu-dit of
‘Les Lignis’. As demand dictates, Pinot Gris accounts for four
hectares of plantings, embellished with 2.20ha of Sauvignon and 2.30ha of
Pinot Noir. The vines average around 20 years old, which dates them to
around the time of the renaissance of the appellation, although the oldest
were planted in 1973, the year he first started making wine.
The kindly and quietly spoken Jacques makes wines that are best described
as delicate and elegant; a little understated, in keeping with the man
himself. Given his localized and loyal following, it’s unlikely that one
will find them much beyond a few restaurant tables within the Berry, but
these wines come highly recommended and are certainly worth seeking out.
