Noel
Cailleau, Domaine de la Ducquerie (2003)
Domaine
de la Ducquerie owns a significant 47 hectare holding around the villages
of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay and Beaulieu-sur-Layon. Noel
Cailleau is the fourth generation to work these wines. In 2000, Cailleau
bought and replanted the old Clos de Fremine in La Possonnière. The
yields here so far have been around 45hl/ha on average.
Wine
overview:
There
is no wood here, all the wines
being fermented in subterranean tanks. The wines are batonnaged to add
complexity, and the malolactic is blocked. The domaine offers the wine for
sale en vrac to anyone who
wishes to purchase before they bottle in the September following the
harvest. Average production is around 5,000 bottles.
The
Wines:
In
the scale of winemaking in the Layon, this is a big operation where the
production of Savennières plays a miniscule part. The wines are well made
and authentic although ultimately a little simple.
2006
‘Clos de Fremine’
Mid
depth appearance. Straw. Floral nose of white flowers showing some early
evolution. Quiet on entry, but builds well. Good stony minerality and well
focused. A clean and crisp style, Well textured and floral on the finish.
This should drink well over the next five years. (02/08)
2005
‘Clos de Fremine’
Bright.
Very pale with some green hints. Gentle, floral nose and a light and
delicate palate. It builds nicely, although is quite a simple style. Very
good minerality to the palate. Good length. Just a little hot on the
finish. This is approachable now, but could be expected to age further.
