Côtes

Grower
Profiles
Stéphanie
Guillot
The sole vigneronne
of the Côtes du Forez, Stéphanie Guillot comes from an old family of
growers in the village of Trelins, although her father and two uncles have
traditionally delivered their crop to the co-operative. In 2005, having
worked in the cellars of Robert Sérol in the Roannaise and at the cave
co-operatives in Tulette and Vinsobres in the Rhône, she returned to
develop her own domaine, renting six hectares of vines in the commune of
Saint-Sixte, situated just to the north of Boën.
The vineyard is made up with Gamay of differing ages, the oldest of which
was planted over a century ago and planted on a mixed gravel and basalt
soil. In addition, there is also 0.6ha of young vine Chardonnay for Vin de
Pays production. The wines are made in a rented cellar in the centre of Boën,
although the wines are commercialised from an old logis alongside the busy Fleurs to Boën road, behind which she has
planted half a hectare of Viognier. Everything, except for the young vine
Gamay that is destined for rosé production, is harvested by hand, and a
move to organic farming is being considered for the future.
WINES :
There are
four wines that carry the appellation Côtes du Forez, starting with a
rather high toned (2008 vintage) Rosé
that is made using a combination of pressurage
direct and saignée. Of the
three reds the Sainte-Anne
is designed for early drinking, although the 2007 is a little rough around
the edges, whilst the Sainte Anne – Le Coup de Cœur de Sainte-Anne Celedon comes
from one specific parcel. The most successful, however, is the Opéra - Fleur de Vigne
which is raised for 7 months in tank and fût
and comes from the 100 year old-plus vineyard in Sainte-Sixte.
The two white Vin de Pays d’Urfé wines consist of a Chardonnay that are not
without some fundamental winemaking faults (volatility and unfermented
sugar in both the 2007 and 2008 vintages) and slightly pithy and phenolic Viognier -
Plumes de Perdrix – Fleur de Vigne, from vines planted in 2003.
